Sept 2016 update from SA Roasters Association

Hi associate (all roasters on the subscription list are considered associates, so forward to those you believe should be members and unsubscribe if you do not want to be); here is a quick update.

Fire Consciousness

It has been said that there are two type of roasters “those that have had a fire and those that will have a fire”.

Cuth (and I believe Matt) thought it may be a great idea to run a fire management course. We found people that run these courses in Jozi and Cape Town. There are at least a day long and require a minimum of 5 attendees.

We posted a survey on twitter to see the interest and had 2 people respond – plus a later discussion via tweets. Cuth (and Matt I think) are still keen to do their own thing, as am I so if you are interested contact one of us direct.

Next Event

There has been no confirmed venue or date in either Jozi or Durban. Dr G has shown interest in hosting an event once his place is up and running.

Ben Carlson

It does bring me to a new event that Grant and I have organizing with regarding Ben Carlson from Burundi, and more specifically the Long Mile Project. We have organized to bring Ben out for 3 days 26-29 October. There will be at least 2 events in Cape Town, and probably one in Johannesburg (being organized by Grant, and perhaps Andrew). One of the Cape Town events we are hoping will be more industry focused. If you are interested in these event, either check the facebook or twitter feed, or email myself or Andrew.

SCASA

Many of our associates are not members of the SCASA. But they extended invite to all for their roadshow recently and I felt that there were some worthy points. They have a two year plan for the various competitions and have teamed up with the EXPOs that have previously hosted the barista, latte and tasting competitions and with them will be creating coffee villages. These villages will provide relatively low entry level costs for coffee people in South Africa to market their stuff.

Also of interest is that they have secure the right to the SCAE course materials – they will be running the barista focused courses at these EXPOs. The roasting course may be made available in Jozi.
The SCASA appealed to all people in the coffee industry to participate in the competitions, whether it be as a competitor or a judge.

That’s all, hope to see you at one of Ben’s events or sooner.
