Feedback From First SA Roasters Meeting – JHB – South African Coffee Roasters Association

Feedback From First SA Roasters Meeting – JHB

Feedback from 1st Jhb Meeting

for the SA Roasters….

On Aug 6 the first Johannesburg based meeting of the SA Roasters association / guild / group etc. was held. The feedback from this meeting is being sent to all current members of the the list. If you would like some one to receive this that you are not sure is on the list then forward it to them so they can subscribe. If you would prefer not to be on the list then click unsubscribe below.

The website is up and I have started accepting membership (when I remember to check that people have applied) so check out saroasters.co.za – this site.

Cuth will be co-ordinating future events with me (Warren), or on her own.

Summary

Here is a summary of items discussed.

  • The concept of running a community in a Johannesburg was well supported
  • A roaster focused community that discusses roasting and coffee is something everyone was keen for
  • Possible events and meetings around marketing of micro roasted coffee were proposed, however it was a divided audience as to if this was the roll of the group, it was decided that there may be marketing focused meetings, perhaps a guest speaker can talk, or a pot of money can be raise to do some advertising, this would be decided later.
  • there was a lot of interest around comparative roast tastings and coffee tasting
  • as with Cape Town; membership should be linked to the fact that you roast or are interested in roasting. People that are attending who are not roasters are welcome however if there is a item out to vote they will not have a vote.
  • Commercial bulk roasters were not preferred as members.
  • It is recommended that each person takes a turn hosting this will mean there is no membership fee
  • it was proposed that the next event at least 4 roasters volunteer their coffee and these are blind tasted and then each roaster can talk about that coffee if they want.
  • The feeling was that the Johannesburg roasters wanted it to be a South African thing not area specific and they are happy to receive notifications for Cape Town, Johannesburg and future areas notifications
  • There was interest in setting up a pool of spares and goodies to be shared
  • Interest in buying green together was expressed as well

Any JHB people want to host the next one?

Further

I will post this summary on the website and you can comment on the post if you feel something was missing.

One thing to note is that if you are not on the subscriber list you will not received emails like this. So if you know some one that is not receiving this then they are not a subscriber.

Cuth also emailed me proposing we put a quick questionnaire together? With questions like:

  • What roaster do you have? (this is actually asked on the sign up form, but it is not always completed)
  • Would you be interested in being part of a spares buying club?
  • Green bean buying club?
  • Would you like to assist fellow roasters cupping?
  • Are you prepared to share your roaster with fellow roasters?
  • etc

I think this is a good idea and I am happy to throw together a survey monkey questionnaire anyone want other things asked

Remember to spread the news and perhaps update you subscription settings (see below).

Disclaimer: Although I do proof read these emails I am not a person that is a talented wordsmith so please bear with me if you have identified any nasties.
