Accounts from Jozi event 5 Oct

It was good to see new people that came to the event.
SA Roasters event 5 Oct

Tasting

At the event 5 coffees were tasted, made through a Chemex using the same recipe as we used in Cape Town 50g coffee to 650g water. The coffee was from 3 different roasting machines and 3 different roasters. Some comments on the tasting are:

  • Valuable feedback was provided to the roasters themselves.
  • It may be worth considering sticking to limited origins so that there can be comparisons made;
  • Maybe also quality grade comparison may be interesting so that coffee from similar grades can be compared;
  • Perhaps a processing comparison may be interesting.
  • Or even a single origin organic vs non-organic comparison

Roasting

Since the event was at Genio, there was a roaster for people to play and roast on. The general consensus was that this was fun, and interesting. Since other events may not have the roaster there, or even the ability for the roaster that may be there to donate green coffee this may be unique to Genio. However Neil has expressed that since this is a roasting platform perhaps the host for the evening should at least provide a run-down of their machines or even do a demo roast or 2 so that we can learn how they do it. This will be up to the host at the time.

Probat Parts

Cuth mentioned they are about to place an order for parts from Probat. Debbie is looking for a site glass, small things like that, and there are others looking for parts too. Please can anyone email cuth.at.beanthere.co.za if they want parts, as soon as possible since she wants to order soon.

In Conversation

A topic people may want to explore? Warren Familiar brought up the question of whether organically-grown coffees taste different because of the way they’re grown. He has got a lot of experience with organically grown produce and so he was asked if he would give us a run-down in the next meeting. So it looks like there maybe a tasting of organically grown carrots vs non-organically grown carrots at the next meeting. Warren will take us through how and why those two growing methods change the taste of the end product. This may end up in a heated debate as to how that ends up translating to coffee but it will be an interesting comparison and one we hope others will find interesting as well.

Ninety Plus

It was mentioned that samples are coming from Ninety plus and if anyone is interested could they email warrenm.at.quaffee.co.za

Next Event

Matt offered Tribeca as the next venue, and next month so that’s cool – we will confirm with him a make a time and then spread the word again.

      We are an association of roasters in South Africa. Perhaps get hold of the roasters guild in the US or Euro.

      For second hand roasters look at Alibaba.

      The Fair trade depends on which organization you are looking for European FLO or US – FairTrade US.
