Concept – localized
The concept of how the SA roasters association/guild/community that has started in Cape Town and now Johannesburg was introduced to the attendees. The core principles are:
- To be independent of the SCASA.
- to be run by the local coffee roasters.
- That there is no membership fee, since each member / participant should take a turn in hosting.
- Membership is logged through the website, or the associated Mailchimp list that is created via joining the website, or by clicking on the link under Member Login-Join us.
- Each event there will be an ice breaker like different coffees to taste, or research to be presented.
- Members are interested in sending bulk emails to other members with regards to parts for roasters and green bean sourcing.
- Knowledge sharing is key to the success of the events, and it was proposed that if people have something they want to discuss that they included in the event invites for the next event.
- Meetings should be at least once a quarter.
- The person hosting the event will chair the event, at least to kick it off.
Topics discussed
- It was proposed that a day meeting should occur at Beaver Creek, so that those that want to attend can spend time with on the farm seeing the coffee growing and how it is processed. This will be open to all members of SA Roasters Association.
- The taste lexicon sheet Quaffee have been working on, and presented at the Cape Town event was discussed. Once it has been tidied a bit this will be published on the SA Roasters website.
- Cuth is looking at bringing some parts in for her Probat roasters, and there was interest expressed by others for sight glass and other parts.
- Craig volunteered to host the next event, he will confirm with Charli with a date a time.
